SME Innovation projects subsidy

Flemish subsidies for innovation (formerly known as IWT grants)

Vlaio (the Flanders Enterprise & Innovation Agency) provides subsidies for innovations through SME feasibility studies, SME innovation projects (for SMEs) and Sprint projects (the medium-sized enterprise variant). The support goes from 35% to 55% with a maximum subsidy of €250,000.

Since 1 January 2018, SME innovation projects, SME feasibility studies, sprint projects and R & D business projects have been replaced by two new grants: Development projects and Research projects. The target group remains similar, the subsidy amounts are higher and the criteria became stricter. Consult the new subsidy program here.

SME INNOVATION PROJECTS

SME innovation projects are aimed at innovative Flemish SMEs that can receive 35% to 55% support with a maximum subsidy of €250,000. For MOs, a Sprint project is possible where the conditions and the application are almost the same as for an SME innovation project. The grants are awarded by Flemish Agency Innovation & Entrepreneurship, formerly known as IWT grants.

An important condition is that the SME innovation projects are aimed at research (and not development). Innovation is defined as the creation of a new (or innovative) product, process or service that requires innovation within the company. Obtaining a clear added value in relation to the market and a high risk of technical failure must form the starting point. The innovation and the relevant knowledge development can be both technological and non-technological in nature. Start-ups are also eligible and the wages of the (co-) founders are also eligible if they are part of the project team.
